Without Parole’s son Zavateri remained unbeaten after narrowly denying Gstaad in a game finish to land the Gr.1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh today for owners Mick and Janice Mariscotti and trainer Eve Johnson Houghton.
The pair quickly pulled clear of the rest, with neither willing to give up. It was nip and tuck all the way before Zavateri got his head down at the right time to give Johnson Houghton a famous victory.
Zavateri was adding to his back-to-back Gr.2 victories in the Coral Vintage Stakes at the Qatar Goodwood Festival and Gr.2 July Stakes at Newmarket in July having won on debut at Salisbury in June. He may now target the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes later this year.
Eve Johnson Houghton said: “Zavateri is a superstar, he really is. He’s come from a long way back and they’ve not been coming back from off the pace. Hats off to Charlie Bishop as there was no plan or pressure, and he sorted it out. I sent him to the July Stakes after his maiden and everyone thought I was mad, but he’s just kept on improving. He definitely wants further as well, especially as he matures.”
From the second-crop of the Newsells Park Stud-based sire, Zavateri was also consigned by Newsells Park Stud at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2 where he sold for 35,000gns to his trainer and Highflyer Bloodstock on behalf of his owners.
Bred by John and Tanya Gunther, also the owner/breeders of Without Parole, Zavateri is the first foal out of the Siyouni mare Zeroua, a half-sister to dual Australian Gr.3 winner Zeyrek and in turn out of the Dalakhani mare Zerkaza, the first progeny of the unbeaten champion Zarkava. Zerkaza is a sister to Gr.1 winner and leading young sire Zarak, as well as Stakes performer Zarkamiya, the dam of this year’s Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner Zarigana.
Zavateri’s half-sister by Ghaiyyath will be offered by Newsells Park Stud as part of our Tattersalls October Yearling Book 1 consignment as Lot 534.
