“He’s a very good-looking colt by a very good son of Frankel. He’s a bit of a standout and makes plenty of sense.” Alex Elliott

Colt ex Rachel Zane (Sea The Moon)

“I was particularly taken by the stock of Without Parole at the yearling sales and was pleased to buy a couple including a lovely easy-moving colt for Simon Munir and Isaac Souede. I was frustratingly underbidder on four others by him and wished I could have bought more! He is a very interesting first season sire in my opinion.” Anthony Bromley
Purchased by Highflyer for 52,000gns at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

Colt ex Silver Link (Arcano)

He’s a very good model with substance. I can see him coming together at two. I’m thrilled to get one by a sire who we’ve bred to and admire.”  Dwayne Woods

Julie Wood (buyer of this colt for 46,000gns)

The fastest son of Frankel

“He was a very sound and tough colt and an incredibly good natured horse to train. He won the St James’s Palace in courageous style off a strong pace and he showed great speed in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.”

John Gosden, Trainer

Without Parole winning St James’s Palace Stakes Gr.1, Royal Ascot. Third fastest time since records began and faster than his sire Frankel.

“There was something rather reminiscent of Frankel's own performance in this race, seven years ago, in the way Without Parole settled the issue but then had to hold off the strong finish of a Ballydoyle colt: Gustav Klimt here reprising the role of Zoffany.”

TDN, 20/06/18

“When Without Parole came to me last year, he immediately showed himself to be a class horse with tremendous ability. Without Parole ran huge in the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Mile to be third after a six month lay-off and it has been hugely frustrating that he hasn’t added another Group 1 win to his resume. He has run some incredibly good races again this year just not had the necessary racing luck.”

Chad Brown, USA trainer

“Without Parole answered every call of mine. He has only run four times and to do what he did was great. He’s a lovely horse with a big future…he moves so good.”

Frankie Dettori, TDN 19/06/18

“Without Parole had too many guns for some of the best milers in Europe on just his fourth start.”

Racing Post, 21/06/18

“I’ve never seen a horse eat and sleep like it, which is a great, great thing in a racehorse.”

John Gosden, TDN 19/06/18

“Sturdy attractive colt, very smart performer.”

Without Parole’s sire Frankel was an absolute phenomenon on the racecourse and appears well on his way to proving his greatness as a sire as well.  Frankel has produced an astonishing 11% Group winners to runners and 15% black-type winners to runners (as of November 2020), and he reached the milestone of 40 Group winners faster than any sire in history.  Frankel demonstrated brilliant speed during his racing career and it is perhaps no surprise that as a son of Galileo he has proven to be a source of stamina as well.

Frankel is the sire of 11 Gr.1 winners of which two are Classic winners: Anapurna, who won the Epsom Oaks (12f), and Logician, who won the St. Leger (14.5f). The average winning distance of Frankel’s progeny is 9.35f while the average winning distance of Galileo’s progeny is indicative of further stretch at 10.36f (Source: Weatherbys Global Stallions 31/10/20). Without Parole is the first out-and-out miler son of Frankel to commence stud duties anywhere in the world and it is conceivable that he will impart that potent combination of speed and stamina among his progeny that enables effectiveness spanning the breadth of Classic distances.

Without Parole’s dam Without You Babe is a daughter of Lemon Drop Kid, a son of Kingmambo and, therefore, a grandson of Mr. Prospector. Without Parole is bred 5 X 4 Mr. Prospector, one of the most influential sires in the last twentieth century:

“His remarkable achievements as a sire, broodmare sire and sire of sires are unparalleled. Noted for passing on speed, precocity and classic ability, Mr. Prospector sired 181 stakes winners from 986 starters (19%), 113 graded stakes winners, 46 Grade 1 stakes winners, and 22 Champions in his stud career” (Source: Claiborne Farm)

Galileo, for whom superlatives fail to do justice with respect to his achievements as a stallion, is himself the product of a matching up of Northern Dancer with Mr. Prospector via the mating of Sadler’s Wells (Northern Dancer) to the great matriarch Urban Sea (by Miswaki, a son of Mr. Prospector).

Without You Babe has the rare distinction of having produced two G1. winning milers, Without Parole and Tamarkuz. Tamarkuz is a son of Speightstown (Gone West), demonstrating that the female family has some affinity for the Mr. Prospector sire line. While this does not necessarily translate to Without Parole working well with Mr. Prospector line mares, the knowledge that Frankel has produced a number of Group winners from this sire line adds intrigue to the hypothesis. Frankel’s Group winners out of Mr. Prospector line mares include Dream Castle (out of a mare by Dubawi, a great grandson of Mr. Prospector), Fair Eva (out of a mare by Observatory, a grandson of Mr. Prospector), Finche (out of a mare by Woodman, a son of Mr. Prospector), Mehdaayih (out of a mare by Gone West, a son of Mr. Prospector), Rostropovich (out of a mare by Machiavellian, a son of Mr. Prospector), Sun Maiden (out of a mare by Kingmambo, a son of Mr. Prospector), and Suphala (out of a mare by Kingmambo, a son of Mr. Prospector). The proven success of both Without Parole’s sire and dam with the Gone West sire line in particular makes this sire line option a particularly intriguing one to consider for Without Parole. Included in the Gone West sire line and therefore possible broodmare sires that may work well with Without Parole include Elusive Quality, Iffraaj, Speightstown, Wootton Bassett, and Zafonic.

Looking again to what pedigree lines have proven successful with Without Parole’s sire and grandsire brings the conversation promptly to Pivotal. Mares by Pivotal have worked very well with Frankel (e.g. Group winners Cracksman, Hungry Heart, and Veracious) and phenomenally well with Galileo (e.g. G1. winners Love, Hermosa, Hydrangea, Magical, Rhododendron, and The United States). It will be no secret that the connections of both Galileo and Frankel are seeking sources of speed for these two stallions; a further reinforcement could be theorized to deliver the essential ingredients for producing top class talent. Particularly intriguing about Pivotal in relation to Without Parole is that mares by Pivotal or sons of Pivotal would facilitate the linebreeding of the brilliant champion miler Nureyev via his daughter Miesque and son Polar Falcon. Such is the fame of Miesque among pedigree and racing enthusiasts alike that she requires no introduction, but reflecting on her greatness makes for an inspiring endeavour. Miesque was a multiple G1. winner and champion at 2, 3 and 4 years of age. A breeder or owner of Thoroughbreds would generally be overjoyed with a horse that attained multiple G1. victories at some stage during their entire career. Meanwhile Miesque achieved this feat in each of her years of racing. One could easily have forgiven her if she had proven to be of lesser greatness in her broodmare career, but the history books are filled with her accomplishments on this measure as well and her influence on the breed has been vast. Polar Falcon is the sire of Pivotal, arguably one of the keys to Galileo’s success and also the sire of rising stallion star Siyouni. In light of the feats and influence of daughter Miesque and son Polar Falcon, a doubling up of Nureyev provides a compelling idea with respect to potential mating plans for Without Parole.

Importantly for the Northern Dancer saturated European landscape, Without Parole does not already contain a doubling up of Danehill, Danzig or Sadler’s Wells, so he is open to mares with these bloodlines in their pedigrees. Mares by sons or grand-sons of Danehill would result in two crosses of Danehill no earlier than 4 X 3 and, similarly, mares by sons of Sadler’s Wells (excluding Galileo) would result in two crosses of Sadler’s Wells no earlier than 4 X 3 (assuming no further duplications from the mare’s female family). Frankel’s G1. winners include four horses inbred to Danzig within five generations: Cracksman, Logician, Mirage Dancer, and Veracious. Frankel’s G1. Classic winner Anapurna is inbred Sadler’s Wells 3 X 3.

Without Parole’s pedigree is completely free of Green Desert, so mares descending from these sire lines would be suitable. Oasis Dream mares have worked well with Frankel. Examples include stakes winners/Group stakes placed Delaware, Obligate, and Mori. Green Desert mares have also worked well with Frankel (e.g. G1. winner Mirage Dancer). Mares by Invincible Spirit or sons of Invincible Spirit would result in two crosses of Danzig no earlier than 5 X 4 (assuming no further duplications from the mare’s female family).

Without Parole’s pedigree is also free of Storm Cat as well as his sons and grand-sons (Giant’s Causeway, Shamardal, and Lope de Vega) and, therefore, is open to mares hailing from this sire line. While Storm Cat is not present in Without Parole’s pedigree it is important to note that his sire Storm Bird is Without Parole’s maternal grandsire. Therefore, Storm Bird will be present in the 4th generation of Without Parole’s progeny and no earlier than the 3rd generation of his progeny when bred to mares from this sire line. The Storm Cat line is responsible for Frankel’s G1. winner Mozu Ascot, a G1. winning miler out of a Hennessy mare. Including mares from the Storm Cat line within the exploration of mares that could work well with Without Parole could prove a worthwhile endeavour.

While the efficacy of the mating plans that produced Frankel’s 2019 crop will only begin to be revealed in 2021, there could be no better place to unearth avenues of potential success than through an analysis that sheds light on the approach taken and influenced by the tremendous breeding operation of Juddmonte. With Frankel having had two crops of racing age under his belt by the time mating decisions were made for the 2019 crop, there were plenty of data points for the breeding masters to have refined their approach to the daunting task of emulating, and helping breeders to emulate, Frankel’s greatness among his progeny. The dominant broodmare sires among Frankel’s 2019 progeny are Dubawi and Oasis Dream followed by Pivotal.  It would stand to reason that a look at this recently produced crop could be enlightening for breeders as we speculate what mares may also work well with his son, Without Parole.
