“Isaac Shelby is one of the smartest horses I’ve ever trained. He oozed style and class throughout his racing career. His win in the Superlative Stakes was impressive, but his performance in the Greenham was sublime. His greatest attribute was his tenacity and his will to win.”
Brian Meehan, trainer
“Isaac Shelby was a hugely talented horse who so nearly got Wathnan off to a dream Gr.1 start when second in the French Guineas – the very first runner in the Wathnan silks. He's a fine horse by a very special young stallion and we'll be very keen to see his offspring when they come to market.”
Richard Brown, Wathnan’s Racing Manager
“Isaac Shelby was even better than his sire at two, and a proper Guineas horse too. He's great-looking, very athletic and has a wonderful temperament. We’ll be strongly supporting him.”
Julian Dollar, Newsells Park Stud’s General Manager

ISAAC SHELBY proved to be an outstanding and consistent sprinter/miler. Rated an impressive 117 by Timeform, Isaac Shelby proved to be a top-class two-year-old winning his maiden, first time out by over three lengths. This was followed by a tough performance when winning the Superlative Stakes (Gr.2) at Newmarket’s July meeting. At three, Isaac Shelby proved too strong for a stellar field in the Classic trial, Greenham Stakes (Gr.3), when getting the better of subsequent Gr.1 winner Charyn by a comfortable three lengths. Although beaten by the narrowest of margins, Isaac Shelby’s best performance was in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Gr.1) when demonstrating he was one of the leading milers of his generation when showing tremendous speed to pull away from the field over a furlong out.
Isaac Shelby is a son of one of Europe’s leading sires, the 2,000 Guineas (Gr.1) winner Night Of Thunder. As Dubawi’s leading son at stud, Night Of Thunder has sired over 55 stakes winners at an impressive 8% to foals of racing age. Night Of Thunder has been a strong source of precocious speed and was himself Europe’s leading first crop sire of 2019 with 28 winners and an impressive seven stakes winners.
Much of Night Of Thunder success has been via Danehill line mares. Not only has Night of Thunder sired his four-time Gr.1 winning sprinter Highfield Princess to a Danehill daughter but he has also sired 12 stakes winners to Danehill granddaughters, at 10% to foals of racing age. These include his Debutante Stakes (Gr.2) winner Vespertilio, who is one of five stakes winners out of Dansili daughters. Daughters of Bated Breath, Clodovil, Danetime, Exceed And Excel, Dylan Thomas, Holy Roman Emperor and Redoute’s Choice are all other dam-sires with stakes success.
Green Desert line mares have also had strong stakes success for Night Of Thunder. The Irish Pretty Polly Stakes (Gr.1) winner Thunder Nights is out of a Cape Cross daughter, while Night of Thunder also has two stakes winners out of Sea The Stars daughters. As Isaac Shelby is bred on a 3×3 to Galileo, so mares by Sea The Stars will create linebreeding 5,5×3 to Urban Sea, while by his sons such as Sea The Moon will also create linebreeding to Urban Sea. Invincible Spirit is also the damsire to a Night Of Thunder Gr.3 winner, while Oasis Dream daughters have also shown stakes success. Invincible Spirit’s son, Born to Sea is another who will create linebreeding to Urban Sea.
Desert Flower, Night Of Thunder’s outstanding unbeaten Fillies’ Mile (Gr.1) winner is out of a Hard Spun daughter, so other fast Danzig strains also look to suit well. Night of Thunder has also had a Gr.2 winner out of a daughter of Orpen and a stakes winner out of a mare by Due Diligence suggesting War Front line mares look appealing.
Nureyev line mares have proved to be a strong source for Night Of Thunder’s success, a cross that creates linebreeding to Special. The Irish Champion Stakes (Gr.1) winner Economics is out of a daughter of Peintre Celebre, a son of Nureyev. Pivotal daughters have produced three stakes winners for Night Of Thunder, headed by the Gr.2 winning miler Flight Plan, at 20% stakes winners to foals of racing age. Pivotal’s son, Siyouni is also the damsire to Night Of Thunder’s top juvenile, the Gr 3 winner Fairy Godmother. SHAMARDAL line mares have also been a strong source of success for the Dubawi sire-line, including at group level.
Although Isaac Shelby is linebred to Galileo, there is scope for Isaac Shelby to cover other Sadler’s Wells line mares. The Italian Oaks winner Auyantepui is out of a daughter of Montjeu, while his son Authorized is the dam-sire of a Listed winner. With this, granddaughters of Montjeu, via the likes of Camelot will create 5,5×4 to Sadler’s Wells. Singspiel daughters have had huge successes with the Dubawi sire-line, including Night Of Thunder, a cross that creates linebreeding to Sunbittern. The Listed winner and Gr 2-placed Al Musmak is out of a mare by Kitten’s Joy.
Night Of Thunder, like his sire, has also had notable successes with Mr Prospector line mares. These include two Gr.2 winners out of Machiavellian line mares. The Gr.2 winners Global Storm and Dynamic Pricing are out of daughters of Street Cry and Dutch Art respectively. Gone West line mares have produced Night Of Thunder five stakes winners to date. These include three via Iffraaj daughters and two via Raven Pass, a son of Elusive Quality. The Gr.2 winner Soprano Basilea is out of a King’s Best daughter; King’s Best is another sire who stems from Galileo family. As does Tamayuz, whose sire, Nayef, is the dam-sire to a Listed winner.
Another Raise A Native branch that has show success with Night Of Thunder is Sharpen Up. Halling is the dam-sire to two stakes winners including a group winner. Cityscape is also a grandson of Sharpen Up. Mares from the speedy Try My Best sire line via the likes of Acclamation branch could produce some really speedy runners. Particularly as Night of Thunder has a Listed winner out of a Harbour Watch daughter.
Monsun daughters have produced plenty of top-class stakes winners, including Gr.1 winners, for the Dubawi sire-line. With Night Of Thunder having sired a stakes winner on the cross any Monsun daughters or granddaughters also look to create an appealing cross.
Dubawi sons have sired three stakes winners, at 14% to stakes winners to Sunday Silence daughters, including one by Night Of Thunder, so in time daughters of Study Of Man could be interesting. Dynaformer, another sire from the Halo sire-line via Roberto, is also the damsire to a stakes winner by Night Of Thunder.
