Without Parole’s son, Zavateri, returned to winning form in impressive style on Saturday, storming home in the Gr.2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood.

The three-year-old, owned by Mick and Janice Mariscotti and trained by Eve Johnson Houghton, had previously this season finished fifth in the Gr.1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and Gr.1 City of York Stakes just seven days earlier, but this time he relished the conditions to achieve a convincing victory of three and a half lengths ridden by Charles Bishop.

“He showed the turn of foot which we know he had–it’s taken him a bit of time to find it this year but I said beforehand that if he goes on the ground, he wins,” Eve Johnson Houghton said of the winner, who had also won the Vintage Stakes here and the July Stakes at two. “He travels with his own teddy bear, because that’s what he loves and it’s his comfort blanket, but he is a machine when it comes to it. The QEII is where we’re going. End of conversation!”

The victory adds another Group success to an already impressive career for Zavateri, who won the Gr.1 Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes at the Curragh last year, remaining unbeaten after narrowly denying Gstaad in a thrilling finish. That followed back-to-back Gr.2 victories in the Coral Vintage Stakes at Goodwood and the July Stakes at Newmarket, having also won on debut at Salisbury.

Zavateri is from the second crop of Newsells Park Stud-based sire Without Parole. He was bred by John and Tanya Gunther, also the owner-breeders of his sire, and was consigned by Newsells Park Stud at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2, where he was purchased for 35,000gns by Eve Johnson Houghton and Highflyer Bloodstock on behalf of the Mariscotti’s.

Zavateri is the first foal out of the unraced Zeroua (Siyouni), a half-sister to the dual Gr.3 winner Zeyrek and a granddaughter of the mighty Zarkava (Zamindar) whose victories included the Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and Prix de Diane. She is now also the producer of Dubawi’s exciting young sire son Zarak and the second dam of Siyouni’s fellow Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner Zarigana. Zeroua’s two-year-old filly Zaire (Ghaiyyath) was a 400,000gns purchase by David Redvers Bloodstock at Tattersalls October Book 1 also from Newsells Park Stud.

Zavateri now looks set to head for another major autumn target, with the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot firmly on the agenda.
