Without Parole’s unbeaten juvenile son Zavateri lands his second Gr.2

29/07/2025

Without Parole’s Gr.2 winning son Zavateri remained unbeaten after denying Morris Dancer in a cracking finish to land the Gr.2 Coral Vintage Stakes at the Qatar Goodwood Festival today. The juvenile was following up his success in the Gr.2 July Stakes at Newmarket earlier this month having won on debut at Salisbury in June.

Stepping up to seven furlongs for the first time, the Eve Johnson Houghton-trained Zavateri successfully conceded a Gr.2 penalty all round and owners Mick and Janice Mariscotti can now look forward to Gr.1 targets with this juvenile.

Johnson Houghton said: “Zavateri is just so tough. He had to win his race twice, as he came to win it and then William [Buick] came at him [on Morris Dancer] and he had to go again. He just amazes me, what a dude he is, what a lovely, lovely horse. He cut through the pack like a knife through butter.

“It was very punchy to come for this race under a penalty but where else do you go? He’s going to have to take a penalty somewhere because the Group One races aren’t until September / October. It was either here or wait until Doncaster and I thought go here and then we can have a nice break until the Dewhurst.”

Jockey Charlie Bishop said: “Zavateri came through and beat the horses around him, and then William’s come over the top, but this horse’s tenacity and attitude to win is unbelievable. He is really tough, has a great will to win and obviously he is very good.”

From the second-crop of the Newsells Park Stud-based sire, Zavateri was also consigned by the stud at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2 where he sold for 35,000gns to his trainer and Highflyer Bloodstock on behalf of his owners.

Bred by John and Tanya Gunther, also the owner/breeders of Without Parole, Zavateri is the first foal out of the Siyouni mare Zeroua, a half-sister to dual Australian Gr.3 winner Zeyrek and in turn out of the Dalakhani mare Zerkaza, the first progeny of the unbeaten champion Zarkava. Zerkaza is a sister to Gr.1 winner and leading young sire Zarak, as well as Stakes performer Zarkamiya, the dam of this year’s Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner Zarigana.

Success continued for John and Tanya Gunther at the Goodwood Festival today with Lake Forest finishing second in the Gr.2 HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes. As well as being bred by them under their Sahara Group Holdings banner, he too was sold by Newsells Park Stud
