Stakes winning form continues for Nathaniel progeny

22/07/2023

Nathaniel’s excellent run of form continued with a second new Stakes winner within 2 hours when Chesspiece landed the Listed British EBF 40th Anniversary Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton last night.

Owned by Godolphin, the three-year-old colt was following up the French Stakes victory by Zeeyara on Thursday, a filly also from Nathaniel’s current three-year-old crop. Other impressive winners from this crop in the last week include Harbour Wind and Beautiful Memory at Naval and Vichy.

Chesspiece made all in this 1m4f race which has seen the likes of Postponed, Defoe and Subjectivist take this route to even higher success. Previously he had finished third in the Gr.2 Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot last month having won at York in May and as a two-year-old in November 2022.

Trained by Simon and Ed Crisford, he also holds entries in the Gr.2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at York, the Gr.1 St Leger, Gr.1 Irish St Leger and Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Chesspiece was bred by Gestut Ammerland out of the talented dam Royal Solitaire (Shamardal), winner of the Gr.2 Badener Meile winner and second in the Gr.1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis – Bayerisches Zuchtrennan, and from the family of Gr.1 horses Cloud Castle, Queen’s Trust and Domestic Spending. He was sold for €100,000 to Stroud Coleman Bloodstock at the Arqana October Yearling Sale.
