Rahiebb’s St Leger performance caps a successful run for Newsells bred horses

13/09/2025

A fantastic few days for Newsells Park Stud bred, raised and sold horses at Doncaster races.

Rahiebb capped the celebrations today with a strong finishing second in the Gr.1 Betfred St Leger Stakes to Scandinavia for connections, trainer Roger Varian, owner Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum and jockey Ray Dawson who was having his first ride in a Classic.

Roger Varian said: “I’m proud and delighted with Rahiebb but gutted to be honest though. Watching it I thought most of the way round he was going to run well and finish strong. With a furlong to run I thought he’d get there but congratulations to the winner, he’s a very good horse. I’m proud of ours and I think he’s got a big future. He was still learning on the job today. He’s a lovely horse and I’m looking forward to him next year.”

Bred and sold by Newsells Park Stud, Rahiebb (pictured as a yearling) is by leading sire Frankel out of the Stakes performing Playful Sound (Street Cry), a half-sister to Group horses Ispolini and Vivionn and daughter of US Gr.2 winner Giants Play.

Yesterday at Doncaster, the smart two-year-old filly Classic Cuvee broke her maiden to gamely win the competitive Coopers Marquees EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes. Trained by Roger Varian she was bred by Newsells Park Stud and is owned by the Newsells Park Stud – Bloodstock 25 racing and breeding syndicate.

Roger Varian said: “Classic Cuvee is a lovely filly. We’ve always liked her and her work’s been solid at home. She made a lovely debut and she built on that today. She has a Group 1 entry and that shows how much we think of her but whether or not that’s realistic this year we’ll have to see.”

By Siyouni, Classic Cuvee is a half-sister to Legatissimo, winner of the 1,000 Guineas as well as the Gr.1 Matron Stakes and Gr.1 Nassau Stakes, out of Yummy Mummy (Montjeu).

On the same card Cape Flora won her third race on the trot with victory in the valuable British Stallions Studs EBF Premier Fillies’ Handicap for trainers John & Thady Gosden and the joint owners and breeders Lordship Stud and Newsells Park Stud.

Cape Flora is a Kingman own-sister to Stakes performer Equitize, out of Waldlied (New Approach), a Gr.2 winning half-sister to four-time Gr.1 winner and Arc winner Waldgeist.
