Newsells bred Waldgeist wins his third Gr.1 race in flying style

Waldgeist added a third Gr.1 success to his form in landing the Gr.1 Prix Ganay at Longchamp over 1m2½f yesterday for owner/breeders Gestut Ammerland and Newsells Park Stud.  On entering the home straight he found instant acceleration when asked by jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot to sprint clear at the 200m marker and win readily by 4½l.

This consistent, tough and talented five-year-old is also a high-class performer at 1m4f having won the Gr.1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud last year, and at two he was victorious in the Gr.1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud.  Add to that, success in two more Gr.2 races, one Gr.3 and multiple placings in other Gr.1, Gr.2 and Gr.3 races.

Trainer Andre Fabre said: “I am very happy.  I think he is a stronger horse this year. It was good to see him do it over a mile and a quarter, but you must remember he was beaten by just a nose in the Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club a couple of years ago and was very unlucky.

“We could go for the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.  I’ve put him in the Coronation Cup and The King George could also be a good option for him.”

Part owner Dietrich Von Boetticher said: “I am very pleased that Waldgeist has improved as a five-year-old and has done it quite easily. The horse looks better this year and he had a hard time in the Arc and then Hong Kong was a terrible trip. But maybe that helped him to win here.”

Waldgeist was bred by Newsells Park in partnership with Gestut Ammerland and Coolmore under the Waldlerche Partnership.  By Galileo, his dam Waldlerche is a Group 3-winning daughter of Monsun whose half-siblings include St Leger winner Masked Marvel and the Listed winner Waldnah.  Waldlerche is also the dam of Gr.2 Prix de Malleret winner Waldlied, her Kingman two-year-old is in training with John Gosden, and her 2019 yearling is a full-sister to Waldgeist.
