Nathaniel’s son Quickthorn demolished the opposition when making all to win the Gr.2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup Stakes at York by 14l today.

It was his second consecutive Gr.2 victory having landed the Gr.2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil at ParisLongchamp in July with another impressive performance.

Trained by Hughie Morrison for owner and breeder Lady Blyth, he was once again given a great ride by Tom Marquand.

Trainer Hughie Morrison said: “He just keeps galloping. Most horses when they go off in front like that die three furlongs out. He obviously didn’t, he’d won the race four out. He’s an improving five-year-old, he’s probably improved a stone this year.”

Tom Marquand added: “I was really impressed. He’s done that on ground that’s probably a bit quicker than ideal. He definitely felt better on slower ground, which leaves you excited for what the future may hold – he’s only just getting going.”

Quickthorn also won the Gr.3 Coral Henry II Stakes at Sandown Park in May, having finished second by just a head in the Gr.3 Longines Sagaro Stakes at Ascot and he was second in the Listed Barry Hills Further Flight Stakes at Nottingham on his seasonal debut in April. He has now won seven races and nearly £430,000 in prize money for his connections.

The five-year-old is out of Daffydowndilly (Oasis Dream), a daughter of Stakes winner Art Eyes and from the family of the Derby and Breeders’ Cup Turf winner and leading sire High Chaparral.

Quickthorn is another consistent high-class Group winner for his sire Nathaniel, in addition to Gr.1 2022 Epsom Derby Classic winner Desert Crown and 11-time Gr.1 winner Enable, and 23 Gr.1/Gr.2 winners or performers on the Flat.
