Damysus followed up his Stakes win a few months ago with a fine victory in the Gr.3 Too Darn Hot Darley Stakes at Newmarket today.
Trained by John & Thady Gosden for Wathnan Racing, the three-year-old colt was always in touch with the leaders, made headway over 2f out and kept on well to win this competitive race by three-quarters of a length.
John Gosden said: “He is a grand horse. He went over to France at the weekend to run in the Prix Dollar but with the rain it was too soft, so all he did was have his lunch and a good dinner in France and then came back on the train! So, he missed a piece of work while he was eating and sleeping in France, but he has gone and won nicely here today. We are very pleased with him. He won at Deauville over a similar trip. We will put him away now as I can’t imagine there is much left for him in our season. I think ten furlongs is right up his alley and we’ll start him out next season in the Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown. I can see the pattern of races now.”
In August, Damysus won the Listed The Aga Khan Studs Prix Nureyev at Deauville, having also finished second in the Gr.2 Dante Stakes and third in the Gr.3 Classic Trial this season.
Bred and raised by Newsells Park Stud with our client Merry Fox Stud, Damysus was sold at the 2023 Tattersalls Book 1 Sale for 460,000gns to Blandford Bloodstock. He is by Frankel out of Legerete (Rahy), also the dam of Stakes winners Pilote and Esquisse.
Later on at Newmarket, juvenile Desert Storm, finished third in the Gr.1 Darley Dewhurst Stakes to Gewan and Gstaad, having won the Gr.3 Somerville Stakes last month for owner Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby. In addition, another Newsells Park raised horse Zavateri finished a fine fourth in this race for his sire Without Parole.
Charlie Appleby said of Desert Storm: “William [Buick] said he rode like a horse who will be better with some time over winter to develop. He felt that the immaturity was coming out in him today, but he’s lost nothing in defeat as we see him as a Guineas horse next year. Whether he runs in the Craven Stakes or has a racecourse gallop before that, we’ll have to see.”
Bred, raised and sold by Newsells Park Stud, Distant Storm, is by Night Of Thunder out of Date With Destiny, the only daughter of the 2,000 Guineas winner George Washington and also the dam of Group winner Beautiful Morning, dam of Group performer Life Is Beautiful. He was sold at Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 to CF Bloodstock for 90,000gns.
