Third Gr.2 victory for Nathaniel’s son Alleno

Nathaniel’s son Alleno landed his third Gr.2 in winning the 2200m Grosser Preis von Tattersalls at Baden Baden today, just a month after victory in the Gr.2 Sauren Dachfonds Preis (Gerling-Preis) for the second year in a row.

Trainer Marcel Weiss said “I’m so happy to have a horse like this, one that improves year after year, and he is amazing. The gap opened up 300 metres from the finish and, if it hadn’t, we might have been unlucky.”

The five-year-old was locked up on the rail and full of running at the top of the straight, he found plenty once breaking through the field to beat last year’s Gr.1 Deutsches Derby winner Hochkonig by three-quarters of a length and the multiple Stakes winner Wilko was a length and a quarter away in third.

A consistent Stakes performer throughout his career, as a three-year-old Alleno also finished second in the Gr.2 Sparkasse Kolnbonn – 189th Union-Rennen and Gr.3 WETTSTAR.de – Bavarian Classic before coming fourth in the Gr.1 Deutsches Derby at Hamburg. He is entered in the Gr.1 Grosser Preis von Berlin in August and is a worthy contender to step up a level.

Alleno is homebred by owner/breeder Manfred Ostermann’s Gestut Ittlingen and is a half-brother to sire and Gr.2 Oleander-Rennen winner Alessio out of the Adlerflug mare Alanda, a half-sister to Gr.1 Prix du Cadran winner Altano and Gr.1-placed Araldo.
