The Newsells bred Distant Storm storms to victory in Gr.3 Tattersalls Stakes

25/09/2025

The Newsells Park Stud bred Distant Storm ran out an impressive winner of the Gr.3 Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket today for Godolphin and trainer Charlie Appleby.

Settling well through the early stages he made up his ground in fine style and pulled away inside the last furlong to win by an easy four and three-quarter lengths, earning him a possible target at the Gr.1 Dewhurst Stakes in a few weeks.

The two-year-old had previously won on debut at Newmarket in July, having then ran too freely in the Gr.3 Tattersalls Acomb Stakes but still finishing third to Gewan and Italy.

Trainer Charlie Appleby said: “It’s not the first time I’ve got one beat in the Acomb but it was my mistake. William was keen to get a pitch on Distant Storm early on and, to do that, he asked him from the gate and the only other time I’ve seen him be keen was when he was on the lead at home.

“We were adamant today to drop him in and let the race develop in front of him and in doing so we’ve seen his acceleration. I think we’ve seen a nice horse in the making. William was impressed and, with the way this season is stacking up with two-year-olds, my initial impression is to look at the Dewhurst. If it were sound ground conditions we’d be happy to take them on. He’s definitely up there.”
