July Stakes Gr.2 winning juvenile strikes for Without Parole

Zavateri showed a fine attitude to win the Gr.2 Kingdom Of Bahrain July Stakes at Newmarket today providing Without Parole with his first Group winner.

A debut winner at Salisbury last month for trainer Eve Johnson Houghton and owners Mick and Janice Mariscotti, the juvenile was always in touch with the leaders before landing the Gr.2 race by a length from Coventry Stakes runner-up Do Or Do Not.

From the second-crop of the Newsells Park Stud-based sire, Zavateri was also consigned by the stud at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2 where he sold for 35,000gns to his trainer and Highflyer Bloodstock on behalf of his owners.

Eve Johnson Houghton said: “He’s got a huge amount of ability and you could see in the paddock he was a bit ‘oh look, we’re at a party’, but in the race he was so professional. I never had a moment’s doubt really. I liked him as a yearling, so much so I sent a mare to Without Parole. He’s got a great attitude and just wants to please.

“He’s bred to get it [a mile] but as I tell my owners you’ve never heard of Usain Bolt’s brother have you? What they’re bred to do and what they do isn’t always the same thing. I think he definitely wants seven [furlongs], we’ll probably run him once or twice more this year.”

Bred by John and Tanya Gunther, also the owner/breeders of Without Parole, Zavateri is the first foal out of the Siyouni mare Zeroua, a half-sister to dual Australian Gr.3 winner Zeyrek and in turn out of the Dalakhani mare Zerkaza, the first progeny of the unbeaten champion Zarkava.  Zerkaza is a sister to Gr.1 winner and leading young sire Zarak, as well as Stakes performer Zarkamiya, the dam of this year’s Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner Zarigana.

It’s been a great week for Without Parole’s second crop with the two-year-old Genchev, finishing third in the Listed Irish EBF Pat Smullen Stakes at Naas on debut for trainer Ger Lyons and owners David Spratt, Sean Jones & Mrs Lynne Lyons, last Saturday.
