Leading consignor at Tattersalls October Book 1 for ninth consecutive year

Newsells Park Stud once again led the consignors table at Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, extending its remarkable run to nine consecutive years. The 19 yearlings sold from the consignment generated an aggregate of 10,555,000gns, at an average of 555,526gns.

Leading the way was the Frankel colt out of Shambolic, an own-brother to Gr.1 Fillies’ Mile winner Ylang Ylang, who sold for 4,000,000gns to the Coolmore team. The second-highest-priced yearling of the sale and in the world, he was a standout result for the consignment. Owned by Newsells Park Stud in partnership with Craig Bennett of Merry Fox Stud, Shambolic is a Stakes-performing daughter of Shamardal and the half-sister to Gr.1 winners Comic Strip/Viva Pataca and Laughing.

MV Magnier, signing alongside Peter Brant’s White Birch Farm, said: “He’s a lovely horse and in fairness to Newsells they do a great job. They’ve bred a lot of good horses, including his sister, who we bought here a few years ago. She was a very good filly and she’s in foal to Justify. Aidan and Dad were here the other day and they both liked him a lot. All the lads were happy to get him.”

Newsells Park Stud’s owner, Graham Smith-Bernal, added: “For me, it was his temperament that was so special. He was always more interested in interacting with humans rather than horses – you’d click your fingers and he’d come over. He is very special. He vetted well, moves very well and he looks a lot like Frankel. We wish them all the best with him. Our stud manager described this horse as the finest horse he’s ever produced.”

Other notable results included the Blue Point out of Tippy Toes colt, who sold to Godolphin for 950,000gns, while the Frankel filly out of She’s Got You, a half-sister to Gr.1 winners Without Parole and Tamarkuz, realised 580,000gns selling to Philip Antonacci and Lindy Farms.

The Equinox filly out of Waldlied, bred by Newsells Park Stud in partnership with Lordship Stud, also attracted interest, realising 550,000gns when knocked down to Godolphin. The only yearling by first-crop Japanese sire Equinox in the Book 1 catalogue, she is half-sister to Stakes performer Equitize, out of a Gr.2-winning half-sister to four-time Gr.1 winner and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe hero Waldgeist, from the renowned ‘W’ family.

Anthony Stroud, on behalf of Godolphin, said: “Equinox is an unbelievable horse and it’s an international market. Japan’s at the highest level of international racing so the more cross-pollination between these countries – America and Japan and European countries, the better. It’s very important.

“We feel very lucky to have her. Newsells were very enterprising in sending the mare to Equinox in the first place. This filly has done so well since she came to the sale. She kept strengthening and developing.”

A further highlight was the Frankel filly out of Yummylicious, a Dubawi half-sister to Classic winner Legatissimo, who sold to leading trainer Andrew Balding for 550,000gns.

Reflecting on the sale, Newsells Park Stud General Manager Julian Dollar said: “It has been a rollercoaster, just like it has been for the past few years. If you have big hitters on your horse and they have the support, then you are going to get very well paid. That more than makes up for the ones that you think are nice but end up slipping through the cracks.

We would like to thank our clients, buyers and underbidders for their continued support and everyone who visited the consignment during the sale. Also a huge thank you to our team for all their hard work throughout the year to ensure these yearlings reach these sales in such good condition.”
