Shapoor Mistry’s homebred Gr.1 Oaks heroine Thundering On (Frankel) was back in the winner’s enclosure in the Gr.2 Moyglare Jewels Blandford Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.

Foaled and raised at Newsells Park Stud on behalf of their client, Thundering On was several lengths off the pace in rear through the early fractions, then straightening for home, she powered forward on the bridle to challenge out wide entering the final furlong and stormed home from there to easily defeat Lilt and Red Letter by one and a half 1 1/2 lengths and a nose.

Trainer Joseph O’Brien said: “I’m really delighted with her and, hopefully, we’re in for an exciting autumn. Ryan [Moore] was very impressed with her which is a good sign. I thought she did very well to win from where she did today. It’s not easy to come from the back here at the Curragh and Ryan felt the same. She loved having a good pace to run at and loved getting a bit of juice in the ground.

I think she could be an interesting prospect for the Arc. We know that she stays the mile-and-a-half and she likes a bit of juice in the ground. I’ll look forward to a discussion with Shapoor and Pallon [Mistry] and Anthony [Stroud] over the next few days where we’ll lock in for our next spot.”

Moore added, “She travels beautifully and has a serious turn of foot. What Aidan, Joseph and Donnacha have done today just shows you what a fantastic job they are doing.”

The victory marked a poignant milestone for owner-breeder Shapoor Mistry, whose family bred Thundering On from their outstanding homebred mare Thundering Nights (Night Of Thunder). A Gr.1 winner herself when capturing the Pretty Polly Stakes in 2021, Thundering Nights sadly died after producing just one foal – Thundering On.

Thundering Nights was the leading performer out of a granddaughter of the dual Gr.1-placed Gr.3 Nell Gwyn winner Cloud Castle (In The Wings). Descendants of Cloud Castle include three-time Grade 1 winner Domestic Spending (Kingman), the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Queen’s Trust (Dansili) and the Gr.1-placed fillies Dabyah (Sepoy) and Royal Solitaire (Shamardal).
