Pedigree Notes

Likely crosses with Equiano

Speed, speed, speed. Equiano does exactly what it says on the tin. Although the progeny of Equiano are competitive at races up to a mile, the optimum and most consistent winning distance of his 17 stakes winners is five to six furlongs. It is also interesting to note that the peak rating of the dams of Equiano’s stakes winners (who raced) were all at distances of a mile or less. This suggests breeders should be focusing on mares from a sprinter/miler background for Equiano.

In analysing the stakes winning progeny by Equiano, the most successful line has been fast Danzig through the Green Desert or Danehill branches. Equiano has sired the Group 3 winner Fly on the Night from a mare by Green Desert. G3W Dark Reckoning and the smart stakes winning Equilateral are amongst three stakes horses bred on the Equiano/Oasis Dream cross from just over a dozen runners. Mares by sons of Oasis Dream such as Showcasing may be worth considering. Equiano has sired the G3W Gustavus Weston from a mare by Cape Cross. Mares by stallions such as Invincible Spirit, Lawman (broodmare sire to a G1 winner by a son of Acclamation) and Kingman could also be considered.

Equiano has sired two stakes winners from less than 10 runners from mares by Rock of Gibraltar which includes G1 Breeder’s Cup Sprint Turf winner Belvoir Bay. Equiano has also sired a pair of Southern Hemisphere G3 winners including Lady Horseowner from a mare by Fastnet Rock (sprinter/miler pedigrees) Other potentially suitable broodmare sires include Exceed and Excel, Camacho, Holy Roman Emperor, etc. Equiano has sired G3 winner Baciami Piccola from a mare by Danehill Dancer. Other options could include mares by Mastercraftsman (pedigrees of a mile or less) Choisir (broodmare sire to a G1 winner by a son of Acclamation), Starspangledbanner, etc.

Equiano has an excellent strike rate with mares from the Riverman/Irish River line including G3W/G1P Strath Burn from a mare by Irish River and G3W Lady Macapa from a mare by his son Exit to NowhereLahib is the broodmare sire to a G2 winner by a son of Acclamation.

Equiano has sired G2W Medicine Jack from a mare by Formidable and there may be some mares by his son Efisio still working in the broodmare population.

Equiano has sired triple G1 winner The Tin Man from a mare by Bishop of Cashel who is a son of Warning. Mares by Diktat or his son Dream Ahead may be worth trying.

Equiano has sired the progressive sprinter Dakota Gold from a mare by Mark of Esteem (miler branch of the Mill Reef line). Mark of Esteem’s speedy son Redback might also be an option.

Equiano has sired a stakes winner from a mare by Polar Falcon and a pair of useful fillies from mares by Pivotal. Other options from this line includes mares by Kyllachy and Siyouni.

Equiano has sired a stakes winner from a mare by Noverre. Mares by Le Havre and from sprinter/miler pedigrees might be an option.
