It was a very exciting weekend for Newsells Park Stud bred horses on the continent!
On Sunday 30th October, the two-year-old colt Waldgeist produced a smart turn of foot to win the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud with authority at Saint Cloud.
The Andre Fabre-trained Waldgeist had to overcome interference in his run but when push came to shove he found enough to draw away from runner-up Best Solution by a length and the land the top-level prize for his owners Gestut Ammerland, Newsells Park Stud and Mrs John Magnier.
Bred by Newsells Park in partnership with Gestut Ammerland and Coolmore under the Waldlerche Partnership, Waldgeist is by Galileo and is the first foal out of Waldlerche, a Group 3-winning daughter of Monsun whose half-siblings include St Leger winner Masked Marvel and the Listed winner Waldnah.
After the race Waldgeist earned quotes of 16-1 for the 2017 Derby, and given his run style and pedigree he looks to have plenty in his favour with regards the demands of 1m4f around Epsom in early June.
On Saturday 29th October the four-year-old filly Strawberry Martini landed the Listed Giovanni Falck race at San Siro in Italy for trainer Henri Pantall. Bred and owned by Newsells, this filly was also chalking up another Stakes race victory for her underrated sire Mount Nelson, who has recently been sold by Newsells Park Stud to stand at Boardsmill Stud.
Both horses are second generation Newsells bred horses, as the stud bred both of their dams: Strawberry Lolly (by Lomitas out of Strawberry Morn), a half sister to the tough race filly Strawberrydaiquiri; and Waldlerche (by Monsun out of Waldmark).
