Pedigree Notes

Likely crosses with Equiano

Royal Applause who is the grandsire of Equiano is rich in crosses of genetic relatives Precipitation and Coronach and has combined strongly with mares and stallions that carry further strains of this type of genetic heritage. Night Shift is one of the most obvious examples. Royal Applause has sired G2W Battle of Hastings and LW/G3P Royal Confidence from mares by Night Shift. Acclamation has sired LW Cake from a mare by Night Shift and G1W Dark Angel whose second dam is by Night Shift. Silver Hawk is another who fits this profile and Royal Applause has sired G1W Ticker Tape and G3W Habaayib from mares by Silver Hawk. Medicean may be worth trying as he is another stallion who is rich in Preciptiation/Coronach crosses and Acclamation has sired G1W Dark Angel from a mare by his sire Machiavellian. Other names further back in pedigrees to look out for are Chamossaire (found mainly through Caro and Tirol) and Sheshoon.

Although Equiano originates to Northern Dancer in the fifth generation through the sub branch of Try My Best, his sire Acclamation and his grandsire Royal Applause have successfully combined with other members of the Northern Dancer branches. The most obvious members of the Danzig line to try with Equiano coincide with those who contain a strain of the mare Somethingroyal such as Green Desert and Chief’s Crown.  Equiano contains a strain of the influential mare Somethingroyal through his third dam-sire Secretariat. Inbreeding to the mare Somethingroyal has been extremely potent and can be achieved through either a second strain of Secretariat (found most typically with Storm Cat, Gone West and Chief’s Crown) or his half brother Sir Gaylord (found in Green Desert). Royal Applause has already sired G2W Nevisian Lad and LW Colonel Cotton from ‘Green Desert branch’ mares and LW Royal Exchange from a mare by Grand Lodge (son of Chief’s Crown). Therefore Green Desert and his sons (Oasis Dream, Cape Cross, Desert Story, etc.) and Chief’s Crown and his sons (Grand Lodge, Key of Luck etc.) look strong possibilities for Equiano. The idea of sending mares by Invincible Spirit to Equiano would be an interesting experiment as it would give duplications of Kris, Somethingroyal and also Border County (Pitcairn who is the sire of Ela-Mana-Mou is a half brother to the grand-dam of Invincible Spirit.).

Storm Cat line mares could be a consideration for Equiano based on the previously mentioned Secretariat/Somethingroyal connection. Royal Applause has sired LW Nice Applause (Catrail) from a Storm Cat line mare. Mujadil is bred on the same Storm Bird/Secretariat cross at Storm Cat.

The Nureyev branch looks like one of the most obvious Northern Dancer branches to try with Equiano. Royal Applause has sired three stakes winners from Nureyev line mares including G3W Lovelace (Polar Falcon), G3W Moth Ball (Soviet Star) and LW Luna Royale (Ashkalani). Acclamation has also sired G3P Broken Applause from a mare by Polar Falcon. There are lots of Nureyev line mares currently in the broodmare population e.g. Stravinsky, Peintre Celebre (contains Somethingroyal), Fasliyev, Soviet Star, Polar Falcon (looks very strong), Pivotal (contains Caro), etc.

Both Royal Applause and Acclamation have sired stakes winners from Nijinsky line mares (Caerleon and Suave Dancer respectively).

Lyphard line mares may also be worth considering as Royal Applause has sired G3W Majestic Missile and LW Royal Intrigue from mares by Dancing Brave and Acclamation has sired LP Little Scotland from a mare by Alzao. It is interesting to note that both Dancing Brave and Alzao are out of mares that are by sons of Sir Gaylord.

It may also be worth trying mares which contain El Gran Senor as he is a full brother to Try My Best which is the sub branch that Equiano originates to within the Northern Dancer sire-line.

Another possibility for Equiano would be to try to inbreed to the influential mare Mixed Marriage. Equiano contains a strain of the mare Mixed Marriage through Kris who is the second dam-sire of Equiano (Kris is a grandson of Atan who in turn is a son of Mixed Marriage). Inbreeding to the mare Mixed Marriage can be achieved utilising any stallion originating to Known Fact (Warning, etc.), Sharpen Up and Gone West/Lion Cavern. This works in quite well with a lot of the broodmare sires that Royal Applause and Acclamation have worked with already. Royal Applause has sired G3W Mister Cosmi and LW/G1P Auditorium from mares by Warning. Acclamation has sired LW Pencil Hill whose second dam was by Warning. Therefore breeders should consider mares by Warning, Diktat, Charnwood Forest or mares which contain Known Fact in their immediate pedigree. Royal Applause has sired G2W Whatsthescript from a mare by Lion Cavern (full brother to Gone West). Royal Applause has sired LW Rosa Delle Alpi from a mare by Diesis and Acclamation has sired G3P Prince Shaun also from a mare by Diesis (Note: Kris and Diesis are full brothers).

From the Mr Prospector sire line, Lion Cavern and his full brother Gone West have already been mentioned, as have Machiavellian and his son Medicean. Royal Applause has also sired stakes winners from mares by Gulch, Distant View and Damister (Acclamation has also sired G1P Anglezarke from a mare by Damister). Royal Applause has sired a stakes winner from a mare by Quiet American who is from the Fappiano branch of the Mr Prospector line.

From the depleted Dante sire-line, Dominion and his son Primo Dominie look obvious targets for Equiano as Royal Applause has sired G3W Peek to Creek and LW Prince Charming from mares by Dominion and LW Sir Albert from a mare by Primo Dominie. Acclamation has sired LP Bespoke Boy from a mare by Primo Dominie.

The various remnants of the old speed Hyperion line may be suited to Equiano as Royal Applause has sired G3W Tremar (Prince Sabo) and G3P La Neige (Cadeaux Genereux) from mares by sons of Young Generation and LW The Bonus King from a mare by Mummy’s Pet.

The Nasrullah lines of Grey Sovereign and Blushing Groom also figure in the leading progeny of Royal Applause and Acclamation. Royal Applause has sired two stakes winners from Blushing Groom line mares. Acclamation has sired two stakes horses from mares that are by sons of Caro (Cozzene and Kaldoun) and LW Pencil Hill whose dam is also by a Grey Sovereign line stallion.

Although there is a limited supply in Europe of the Nasrullah based Bold Ruler line, any mares left by Persian Bold should be considered for Equiano as Royal Applause has sired G2W Please Sing and LW Royal Storm from mares that are by this sire.
