Once again, Equiano, was electric from the gate and showed blistering speed to finish second in the Darley July Cup (Gr.1) over 6f at Newmarket today, just headed in the final furlong by Starspangledbanner.

It was another brave performance from Equiano, following up his second King's Stand Stakes (Gr.1) win at Royal Ascot, where he beat other Group 1 winners Kingsgate Native, Borderlescott, Nicconi and Total Gallery. Equiano's next target is likely to be the Nunthorpe at York.

Whilst frustrated Equiano was beaten by such a short margin, Newsells Park Stud was also delighted with his run today having recently purchased a substantial share in the colt to stand at the stud in 2011.

Congratulations to all the connections including ownership partner James Acheson, trainer Barry Hills, jockey Michael Hills, and breeder Ecurie Skymarc Farm.

By champion first-season sire Acclamation, Equiano was a winning two-year-old and one of Europe’s top sprinters at three when winning the 5f King’s Stand Stakes (Gr.1) at Royal Ascot. This season as a five-year-old, as well as his fine perfomance today, he has won the King's Stand Stakes (Gr.1), Palace House Stakes (Gr.3), Abernant Stakes (L) and finished second in the Temple Stakes (Gr.2).

The Stud also owns Equiano’s dam Entente Cordiale (Ela-Mana-Mou), who is the dam of three winners from her five foals of racing age.

Equiano will stand alongside the dual Group 1 winner Mount Nelson (www.mount-nelson.com) at Newsells.
